How to Survive a Festival in a Heatwave (A still have fun)
Festival season is all about good vibes, great music and unforgettable moments. But when a heatwave hits, it can quickly turn into a bit of a mission. Dancing all day in blazing sun, barely any shade, and a drink in hand sounds great until it catches up with you.
The good news is you don’t have to suffer through it. A few simple habits can keep you cool, safe and still fully enjoying the weekend.
Stay Hydrated
It sounds obvious, but it’s the one people get wrong the most. Between the heat, the dancing and a few drinks, your body loses water fast.
Drink regularly throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty. Bring a refillable bottle or hydration pack if you can. If you’re sweating a lot, adding electrolytes will help. A good rule is to alternate alcohol with water. If you’re not going to the toilet much, you need more fluids.
Dress for the Weather
You can still look the part without overheating. Heavy outfits and dark colours will trap heat and make things harder for you.
Go for light, breathable fabrics like cotton or mesh. Lighter colours help reflect the sun. Hats and sunglasses aren’t just accessories in this weather, they make a real difference. Loose clothing also helps air flow and keeps you cooler.
Take Breaks in the Shade
Standing in direct sun all day will drain you quicker than you expect.
Make time to step into shaded areas whenever you can. Chill tents, food areas or even heading back to your own setup for a bit can help reset you. Even ten minutes out of the sun can give you a second wind.
Look After Your Skin
Sunburn can ruin your weekend and everything after it.
Put sunscreen on before you even get into the festival and keep topping it up throughout the day. Don’t forget spots like your ears, neck and shoulders. It’s easy to miss them and they always catch the sun.
Eat Something Proper
You might not feel that hungry in the heat, but your body still needs fuel.
Try to eat little and often rather than skipping meals. Fruit is a great option because it helps with hydration as well. Relying on drinks alone will catch up with you.
Pace Yourself
It’s easy to go all in early, especially when the atmosphere is buzzing, but festivals are a long game.
Take breaks between sets, sit down when you need to and don’t ignore how you’re feeling. Missing one act is better than feeling rough for the rest of the weekend.
Cool Yourself Down
Small things can make a big difference when the heat gets intense.
A spray bottle or cooling mist is a lifesaver. Even a damp cloth on your neck can help bring your temperature down. Splashing your face with water or standing near misting areas can give you a quick reset.
Look After Your Mates
Heat can hit people quickly, so keep an eye on each other.
If someone seems dizzy, sick or confused, get them into shade, give them water and help them cool down. If it looks serious, don’t hesitate to get medical help. It’s always better to be safe.
Heatwaves at festivals can be tough, but they don’t have to ruin the experience. With a bit of awareness and looking after yourself and your group, you’ll still be dancing from start to finish. 🙌🏼🎵
